42. Of Youth and Age

Central Argument: Bacon is saying that the young people are the 'thinkers' and 'doers' of society as their imagination is unlimited as they have not seen a lot of the world, and the old people are the people that manage the things that the young people do, this is because they have seen more of the world and have experienced more things.

Sir Francis Bacon writes in this essay about how society is affected by age, and how people's abilities and thoughts change as they grow older. He talks about how this change keeps balance in society and makes it thrive to move forward. He talks about the way the two collaborate and shape society and make it the best they possibly can. I believe that he is quite true and that his analogy, which is over two centuries old, still stands true today. He shows us examples from history to prove his points, but if we look at society today, we can see that there are people that are replicas in some way of his examples.

All of Sir Francis Bacon’s examples were of kings and conquerors. Society today is very different from society back then, when conquering a nation was far more common, and looks like it happened on a daily basis. These days with so many complicated international organizations, treaties, outside pressure, and on top of all those the threat of nuclear war keeps the chances of even a threat of war very minimal, so our world today was taken over in a completely different way, one that could not be imagined back then. In one word that way is called the Internet. The Internet was made famous by Google, which is literally the place where everyone goes to look of anything of any kind. The inventor of Google was only 20 years of age when he first launched the web site. This new revelation was all because of imagination and the unknowing of limitations. Bacon says that the young people are the imaginary ones and they don’t have boundaries, as they are inexperienced. No elder person would have thought of a website that can look all over the Internet to look for what you want. Google ruled the Internet for many years, and in some way still does, but now there is a new website where the whole world is, and that is Facebook. Designed by a man who was still in college at the time, Facebook has over 750 million members who have joined in the span of just eight years. One boy invented this company with his friend after he got back from the diner where he had just broken up with his girlfriend. Facebook is another example of young people’s will to do without thinking of the consequences, which is another thing Bacon highlights in his essay.

So as you can see that the world today is not taken over in an international border sense, but in a way that links every nation together with ease and no threat of war. If we look at the cause of unification now and back then we see it is the young people’s will and imagination of doing it. It they who thought about it, and went ahead and did it. If old people would have had the idea, they would have thought about it and said to themselves ‘cant be done’ but young people showed that you really decide that until you at least try.

TV is good for you

The article stated that the TV was good for women in rural India because it changed their thoughts about women's role in society and made them think about things other than what the tradition is.

I believe that TV is good for people as long as they do not watch it all the time. We live in urban cities, where it is not uncommon to have television sets, but in villages it is very rare and people barely get a chance to watch TV. We take all the knowledge learned from different shows for granted because we consider it common knowledge, but people who never watch TV don’t learn things that we learn everyday from it. In the villages, where education is also almost nothing, people have to learn just what their parents and fellow villagers teach them. They themselves have not learned anything new, then how will they teach their kids? This is why TV is good for the people in the villages. It gives them an outside perspective in life, which is something that is really needed in Indian villages, where tradition and culture form the way of life. People do not know what is new in the world, or how to change to live a better life, they just have to accept the little knowledge they get from their parents and fellow villagers.

Even in cities, where TV’s are everywhere, and it is uncommon not to have a TV, it can be good to watch TV. People think that TV only has ‘junk’. I believe that that is not true. These days TV can teach us so many things and now there are channels teaching people everything from English to history to science. There is nothing that is not there on TV. We just have to know what to watch and what not to. Even movies and TV shows are not bad, but we have to watch them in moderation, like everything else in life. Kids can learn so much from TV. 5 or 6 year old kids learn from all kids shows that make learning fun, and teach them the stuff that they learn in school, but in a fun and more exciting way. This way the kids learn more. TV also tells us what it going on in the world around us. News channels are in abundance these days. If we did not have them, then the whole world would be living in its own bubbly. Nowadays we can know what is happening halfway around the world within seconds of the situation actually occurring, this is mainly because of TV, and it power to appeal to the masses and share messages so quickly and accurately.

TV has revolutionized the world we live in and everyone has a good reason to watch and learn from it. No one in this world know everything, but TV is something that can tell us about almost anything and make us learn about stuff we would never have thought of and widen our gaze.

Is it better to give or receive gifts?

Is it better to give or receive gifts?

I find the tradition of gifting very interesting. You give something to someone else hoping they would like it. That is why I personally like receiving gifts more than giving them. Some reasons are obvious, like economic benefit. That however is very small reason. Receiving gifts is fun. I like the excitement you get while opening a gift box. I always wonder whether there is a GI Joe inside, from a relative who think I am 10, or a little money because the person did know what to get me. Either way I appreciate both, one more than the otherb. It is also an indication that someone cares about you, maybe not likes, but at least pretends to like you. It is comforting for me and probably everyone in the world. Giving gifts just shows that you care about someone, not the other way around. The other person can be faking, about care, but when you get a gift you know that someone is out there looking out for you.

Holiday Challenge :1

If animals could talk, what would your pet say about you?

I dont know really. Maybe that is because I dont have a pet. My family members dont like to keep pets. The only pets I ever had existed about 7 years ago, they were 2 gold fishes. They were in my sister's and my room. They loved me. That was because I always fed them and was always very hyper about them. I had always wanted a pet and took very good care of them. I used to drive my mother crazy when the fish tank started to look green, because I thought that the fish were going to die. I am pretty sure that the fish would say that I was the best owner they could have hoped for. They always had food as I would always put extra in it to be sure. Now that I think back to those days I realize that I used to pamper them. Lucky for me that they were just fish. Any pampered kid loves his or her parents because they get all they want. The fish would say stuff like ‘caring’, ‘loving’, and maybe even ‘obsessive.’ But of course, we can never know. Pets can be person’s best friend, and I treated mine better than you treat a best friend. On the contrary, the fish might also say that I used them for my entertainment, because I used to hang out with humans more. That depends on what type of mentality they had. They might have been angry because I don’t remember giving them names. Everyone likes a name and I didn’t give them one. So who knows what they might have said, and they should not have judged me, because I was only nine back then, they couldn’t have expected me to be the brightest master anyway. I cared about my fishes and as long as they saw that I am fine.
